Like most of the social media for La Taverna, my parents, Rose and Lawrence, the owners for the past 35 years (as of 2024), have relied on their eldest child to maintain this website. Considering the fact they are both helpless when it comes to technology and the chances of them checking this particular section of the website is low, I thought I might as well tell you about the one and only La Taverna Pizzeria e Cucina from their daughter’s perspective.
*EDIT* I wrote this when I was 14, I'm now 22 - only one person has snitched to my parents about this but they didn't know how to access it to read thus there's no reason to edit it after 8 years. Enjoy!
The restaurant was established in 1969, making it one of the first Italian Pizza restaurants in Melbourne behind Toto’s. 20 years later (1989), my father, aged 22 took over the business, bringing along his family and partner (my mother) Rose. Previous to this, the Iacovone’s had had decades of experience in the restaurant industry, dad starting at a particularly young age. From the beginning to ownership to now, my parents will say a lot has changed and they, along with the shop, have been there to experience it. Despite being vastly younger, I can agree with this. Mum always dwells on the fact the she has seen children grow into adults and then seen the birth of their kids, she’s been there for peoples first dates which in some cases have resulted in marriage, and been through people’s highs and lows. Both my parents, over all these years, have met so many and built connections/relationships with so many beautiful people to the point where they feel a part of the family. I think that’s what separates us from the rest. We are already known and renowned for our “family/homely atmosphere” but my parents’ take it next level. It must be the Italian love.
The restaurant itself, has seen 3 major renovations during its time with my family, now currently sitting roughly around 60 people. The "live action" of "real Italian cooking" being heard through out the whole building, this restaurant is as authentic as Italian cooking gets (to the point where we have to have to have a sign to alert new comers - check our socials for a photo). With a extensive menu with large proportions, it's a favourite among all. Serving 33 different pizzas, just under 20 different pasta sauces, a long list of meat and poultry and seafood, along with other things, there is always something for everyone.
Growing up in this environment, with my nonna, both parents and staff which felt like more relatives, I am grateful. As much as my brother and I complain about having to work, we wouldn’t change it for the world. This place is more our home then our house. My parents have put their heart, life and soul into this place and for what they have done, they should be proud of the community staple they created.
We hope to see you soon
